If you live in North Dallas, you have probably driven past dozens of churches on your way to work. Faith is woven into the fabric of Collin County — from Frisco to Plano to McKinney to Allen. And yet, when life gets hard, many deeply faith-active people hesitate to seek therapy.
The hesitation often sounds like this: Shouldn't I just pray more? Shouldn't my faith be enough? What will people at church think?
At Bloom Professional Counseling, we hear this all the time. And our answer is always the same: seeking help is not a sign of weak faith. It is an act of courageous stewardship.
This article explains what Christian counseling actually is, how it differs from secular therapy and pastoral counseling, and how to know if it might be right for you or someone you love.
What Is Christian Counseling?
Christian counseling — also called faith-based therapy or faith-integrated therapy — is licensed clinical mental health care that intentionally incorporates Christian faith, values, and spiritual perspective into the therapeutic process.
It is not:
- A Bible study session
- A lecture on your spiritual failures
- A substitute for medical or psychiatric care
- Pastoral counseling from a clergy member
It is:
- Evidence-based therapy (CBT, EMDR, DBT) delivered by a licensed professional
- A therapeutic relationship where your faith is welcomed and honored
- A space where Scripture, prayer, and spiritual reflection can be part of the healing process — if you want them to be
- Clinical care that treats the whole person: mind, body, and spirit
At Bloom, faith integration is always client-led. Some clients want prayer woven into every session. Others prefer a primarily secular approach with occasional spiritual reflection. Both are completely welcome here.
How Is Christian Counseling Different From Pastoral Counseling?
This is one of the most common questions we receive — and it is an important distinction.
Pastoral counseling is provided by clergy — pastors, priests, chaplains — who offer spiritual guidance and support from within a religious framework. Pastoral counselors are not typically licensed mental health professionals, and their training is primarily theological rather than clinical.
Christian counseling at Bloom is provided by licensed mental health professionals — LPCs, PsyDs, and LCSWs — who share and honor your faith. Our therapists use evidence-based clinical methods alongside a Christ-centered perspective.
Think of it this way: your pastor is an expert on your spiritual life. Our therapists are experts on your mental health. Christian counseling is what happens when both are honored in the same room.
What Happens in a Christian Counseling Session?
Sessions at Bloom look and feel like professional therapy — because that is exactly what they are. The difference is the presence of faith as an invited, honored dimension of the work.
Depending on your preferences, a session might include:
- Evidence-based techniques — cognitive restructuring, EMDR processing, DBT skills
- Spiritual reflection — exploring how your faith shapes your understanding of your struggle
- Scripture — when relevant and invited, Biblical passages can provide framework and hope
- Prayer — some clients find prayer meaningful in their sessions; others do not. Your therapist always follows your lead
Who Is Christian Counseling For?
Faith-based therapy at Bloom is a good fit if any of these resonate with you:
- You want a therapist who shares or deeply respects your Christian faith
- You are struggling with anxiety, depression, or trauma and want healing that honors your whole self
- You are navigating a spiritual crisis — doubt, deconstruction, or feeling distant from God
- You are dealing with grief and want a therapist who understands eternity, hope, and lament
- You have a teenager struggling and want a therapist who understands a Christian household
- You simply want therapy where you do not have to self-censor your faith
Does My Insurance Cover Christian Counseling?
Yes — in most cases. Because our therapists are licensed clinical professionals, sessions are billed as standard mental health therapy and covered by most major insurance plans including UHC, Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Tricare, and Medicare.
We verify your benefits before your first session so you know exactly what to expect — no surprises, no hidden costs. Self-pay and sliding scale options are also available.
Why North Dallas Is a Natural Home for Faith-Integrated Therapy
Collin County is one of the most church-dense communities in Texas. Frisco, Plano, McKinney, and Allen are home to hundreds of congregations — from megachurches like Prestonwood Baptist and Stonebriar Community Church to smaller neighborhood faith communities that form the backbone of family life in the suburbs.
In this context, faith is not a fringe consideration. It is central to how thousands of North Dallas families understand themselves, their relationships, and their suffering. And yet finding a therapist who genuinely honors that faith has historically been difficult.
Bloom Professional Counseling exists to fill that gap — serving the faith communities of Frisco, Plano, McKinney, and Allen with clinical excellence and genuine spiritual sensitivity.
